Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder that gradually destroys a person's memory and ability to learn and reason. Scientists estimate that up to 4.5 million Americans suffer from AD, and direct and indirect costs of care are more than $100 billion annually. The impact on families and caregivers is countless. No cure for Alzheimer's exists, but new treatments are on the horizon which offer promise to prevent, slow or even reverse damage to nerve cells. Ongoing research will help clarify the role of cardiovascular factors or other aspects of risk that individuals may be able to influence through lifestyle. Objectives: Join Dr. Gandy in learning more about the pathology of Alzheimer's; new approaches to treatment; and what individuals can do to lessen their risk factors.
